Bingo Boss Strikes Out at Labour Government

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

The Chief Executive Officer of Rank (Mecca Bingo) has struck out at the Labour Government, saying that they are “myopic and inconsistent”. He joins together with a group of leisure operating companies in publicly criticizing the government of Gordon Brown. This criticism came in the form of a letter from Mr. Burke to the Daily Telegraph. He said that he, and the Rank bingo and gaming group had a great deal in common with Punch Taverns’ and JD Wetherspoons CEO’s.

Tim Martin and Giles Thorely, both CEO’s of  the UK’s major pub groups have called for the resignation of Alistair Darling and asked for a five year suspension of beer duties. 36 pubs were closing every week during the first half of 2008. Bingo has also suffered and the CEO of Rank believes this is due to the Labour Governments inconsistencies when regulating and taxing the leisure industry. Rank employs 8 000 people throughout their bingo halls and other gaming activities, and Ian Burk feels that the financial impact they are experiencing will lead to a “deeper and more societal impact”.

Rank operates more than 100 Mecca Bingo clubs in the UK, they also have 32 casinos and have been providing leisure activities to people in the UK for well over seventy years. They are in the business of providing entertainment to people in a safe social environment, and their employees take pride in what they do for a living. Because of these Labour government inconsistencies they have been unable to create new jobs through further investment.
